Evidence-informed instructional design that converts complex concepts into applied learning

Dr. Sean Warren

Learning Design Specialist

Dr. Sean Warren has worked in education since the 1980s, holding a variety of roles across schools and higher education - including Advanced Skills Teacher (AST), University Lecturer, National Strategy secondee, as well as an experienced Head of Department.

Throughout his career, each of his academic qualifications - B.Ed (Hons), Diploma in Education, MA (Ed), and PhD - has deepened his practical and theoretical understanding of how people learn. During his final 11 years in the classroom, every formal observation, including those by senior leaders and Ofsted, was graded Grade 1-Outstanding.

Sean is also a published author, with his writing focused on learning, professional reflection, and evidence-informed practice. Since leaving teaching, he has continued to apply research-led learning principles - first within the FA's Talent ID department, where he worked on improving how England's national scouts interpret player performance, and more recently through the design of innovative digital learning tools rooted in evidence-informed instructional design.

His collaboration with Capt. Sean Noonan on HF-Sea Sense reflects a shared commitment to improving safety at sea. The programme translates complex Human Factors insights into accessible, applied learning for both seafarers and shore-based personnel - underpinned by a coherent, progressive learning pathway built on robust pedagogical foundations.

Alongside his work in education, Sean has also played a long-term role in leadership development. He is an honorary member of the Resilient Leaders Elements (RLE) community, having been an accredited member since its inception in 2000. Elements of his methodology have contributed to the development of the Resilient Leaders Development Programme (RLDP), a framework now used to support leadership growth in a wide range of sectors.

Our Learning Design Approach

Evidence-informed principles that ensure effective knowledge transfer and practical application

🎯

Evidence-Informed

Every learning pathway is grounded in robust research on how adults learn, ensuring maximum retention and practical application in maritime contexts.

🔄

Progressive Learning

Our four-level structure builds competence systematically, with each level reinforcing and extending previous learning while introducing new concepts.

🛠️

Applied Practice

Complex human factors theory is translated into concrete, actionable skills that seafarers can immediately apply in their daily work.

📊

Measurable Outcomes

Clear learning objectives and assessment criteria ensure that progress is visible and competence can be demonstrated and verified.

🤝

Collaborative Design

Combining maritime expertise with pedagogical knowledge creates training that is both technically accurate and educationally effective.

🎓

Professional Development

Courses are designed not just to inform, but to transform practice and develop leadership capability across maritime organisations.
